The best text to speech app for iPhone in 2026: 7 options compared
The best text to speech app for iPhone depends on what you read. Voice Read, Speechify, NaturalReader and four more, compared on price, free tier and export.
Disclosure: VoiceRead is made by the team that publishes this site, and it’s one of the seven apps below. To keep this useful, every app — ours included — is described from its own public pages and App Store listing, checked on 2026-10-28. Prices and limits change often, so check the current listing before you pay.
Short answer: for a quick listen in any app, use the free Speak Screen built into iPhone. To listen to your own PDFs and ebooks with your place saved, VoiceRead gives you unlimited free listening with no account, costs less a year than Speechify, NaturalReader or ElevenReader, and also exports audio with captions. If you need the same app on Android, Windows or in a browser, choose Speechify or NaturalReader. For 1,000+ voices in a listening-only app, try ElevenReader. For voices that all work offline, look at Voice Dream Reader; to pay once, Speech Central.
How we compared them
Five questions decide whether a read-aloud app works for you:
- What it reads. PDFs, ebooks, Word files, web links and photos of printed pages — and whether scanned PDFs work.
- How it reads. Word or sentence highlighting, the speed range, whether it keeps your place, and whether it works offline.
- What it costs. The yearly price, and what the free tier really allows: voices, hours, words or characters.
- Whether you can keep the audio. Some apps export audio files, a few add captions, and some are for listening only.
- Where it runs. iPhone and iPad only, or also Android, a computer and a browser.
We didn’t score voice quality. It’s personal, and the fairest test is the same page of your own text in two or three apps.

1. VoiceRead: best for listening and making audio files on a budget
Price: free; Pro is $49.99 a year or $2.99 a week, with a free trial.
VoiceRead reads PDFs, DRM-free EPUBs, DOCX and TXT files, web links, camera scans and pasted text aloud, highlighting each sentence. Its Studio turns any text into an audio file.
- Strengths: unlimited listening with standard voices and no account; notes pinned to the sentence and your place saved per document; standard voices work offline; export M4A free (3 downloads), and with Pro unlimited M4A, lossless WAV and an .srt captions file, with commercial use allowed; no word quota on Pro. How export works.
- Drawbacks: iPhone and iPad only (Android is coming soon); sentence highlighting only, with word-level coming soon; voices in 16+ languages, fewer than Speechify, NaturalReader or Voice Dream Reader; no PowerPoint, RTF or HTML files; scanned PDFs need the camera scanner until OCR for imported scans arrives; premium voices need a connection.
2. Speechify: best if you read on many devices
Price: $139 a year or $29 a month on the web; App Store prices differ.
- Strengths: runs on iPhone, iPad, Android, Mac, Windows, the web and as a Chrome and Edge extension; 1,000+ voices in 60+ languages on Premium; word and sentence highlighting; up to 4.5× in the iPhone app; reads PDF, EPUB, DOCX, TXT, web pages, Google Docs, camera scans and pasted text.
- Drawbacks: the free tier is 10 standard voices up to 1.5×; premium voices have a monthly quota — a baseline of 150,000 words, with 1,000,000 guaranteed through December 31, 2026; MP3 export is web-only, Premium-only and capped at 50 hours a year on annual plans. VoiceRead vs Speechify.
3. NaturalReader: best if you also listen at a computer
Price: Lite $79, Plus $119 or Pro $159 a year ($13.90–$25.90 a month). The App Store still lists an older Premium tier at $9.99 a month or $59.99 a year.
- Strengths: a web app for Mac, Windows and Chromebook, plus iPhone, iPad, Android and a Chrome and Edge extension; 200+ AI voices in 90+ languages; word, sentence or no highlighting; 0.28× to 5×; a long file list — PDF, DRM-free EPUB, Word, PowerPoint, Excel, TXT, RTF, HTML, web pages and camera scans; free forever with basic voices; money back within 7 days on request.
- Drawbacks: the free tier has no MP3 and allows 20,000 characters a day with Lite AI voices; Plus and Pro voices are capped at 500,000 characters a day; OCR for image PDFs is paid; MP3 export (1,000,000 characters a month) is for personal use only. VoiceRead vs NaturalReader.
4. ElevenReader: best for listening only, with a big voice library
Price: Ultra is $99 a year or $11 a month, with a 3-day trial.
- Strengths: 1,000+ voices; 0.25× to 4×; runs on iPhone, iPad, Android and the web; reads PDF, EPUB, DOCX, TXT, HTML, links, camera scans and pasted text; Ultra allows up to 24 hours a day of your own imports.
- Drawbacks: no audio export — the audio is for personal listening in the app; the free plan is 10 hours a month, and faster playback uses hours faster; offline downloads are paid only; files are limited to 500 pages. VoiceRead vs ElevenReader.
5. Voice Dream Reader: best for offline voices across many formats
Price: a subscription is required to use the app: $4.99 a month, or annual options from $39.99 to $79.99. People who bought it before the 2024 switch kept their features.
- Strengths: every voice works offline; 200+ premium voices in 30 languages; highlights the word being spoken; reads PDF, Word, PowerPoint, RTF, Google Docs, DRM-free EPUB, DAISY, web articles and Bookshare titles; a built-in scanner for Latin alphabets; background playback; runs on iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch and Vision Pro. It’s an App Store Editors’ Choice, rated 4.5 from 14K ratings when we checked.
- Drawbacks: no free way to use it; Apple devices only; the scanner handles Latin alphabets only.
6. Speech Central: best if you’d rather pay once
Price: free with a daily article limit; Pro is a one-time $9.99.
- Strengths: one payment, no subscription; reads PDFs including scanned ones, EPUB, DOCX, PPTX, HTML, TXT, RTF and Markdown; offline voices; exports text to audio files; runs on iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, Vision Pro and Apple TV; rated 4.6 from 1.6K ratings when we checked.
- Drawbacks: the free version limits how many articles you can hear a day; extra online voices need your own API keys from the voice provider, which takes some setup; Apple devices only.
7. Speak Screen and Accessibility Reader: best free option, already on your iPhone
Price: free, built into iPhone.
Turn them on in Settings → Accessibility → Read & Speak (called Spoken Content in earlier iOS versions). Select text and tap Speak, or swipe down with two fingers from the top of the screen to hear the whole screen. Accessibility Reader opens a full-screen reading view in any app, and you can adjust the speaking rate and highlighting.
- Strengths: free, nothing to install, works in any app.
- Drawbacks: no document library, no saved place across files and no audio export.
How to choose
Match the app to the job, not the other way round:
- An email or a web page now and then: Speak Screen.
- Long PDFs and ebooks read aloud on iPhone or iPad, with your place saved: VoiceRead, Voice Dream Reader or Speech Central.
- Audio files you keep: VoiceRead (M4A, plus WAV, .srt captions and commercial use with Pro), Speech Central, or NaturalReader for personal-use MP3s.
- Phone and computer: Speechify or NaturalReader.
- Android: Speechify, NaturalReader or ElevenReader. VoiceRead’s Android app isn’t out yet.
- Paying once: Speech Central.
- Not paying at all: start with the free tiers. VoiceRead’s standard voices and NaturalReader’s basic voices are unlimited; ElevenReader gives 10 hours a month.
Then put the same page of your own text through your top two. Ten minutes of listening tells you more about a voice than any list.
The bottom line
There’s no single best text to speech app for everyone. Speak Screen costs nothing, Speechify and NaturalReader follow you to other devices, ElevenReader and Speechify offer 1,000+ voices, and Voice Dream Reader and Speech Central suit people who stay on Apple devices and want offline voices. If you want one app that reads your files aloud on iPhone and turns text into audio you can keep, VoiceRead is free to start — see what Pro adds.
